Question 1
A pattern is made using squares. The first four pattern are shown below:
How many square will there be in the fifth pattern?
Solution:
The number of squares in each pattern is:
Pattern 1: 2 square
Pattern 2: 4 square
Pattern 3: 8 square
Pattern 4: 16 square
The number of squares doubles each time.
Therefore, the number of squares in the fifth pattern will be 16 x 2 = 32.
Therefore, there will be 32 squares in the fifth pattern.
Question 2
Solve for x in the following equation.
Solution:
3x/8 + 5 = 26
3x/8 = 26 – 5
3x/8 = 21
3x = 21 x 8
3x = 168
x = 168/3
x = 56
Therefore, x = 56.
Question 3
A recipe for 6 cakes needs 108g of flour.
Mona has 396g of flour. How many cakes could she make?
Solution:
108g of flour is needed to make 6 cakes.
108g/6 = 18g of flour is needed to make 1 cake.
Mona has 396g of flour.
396g/18g = 22 cakes.
Therefore, Mona could make 22 cakes.
Question 4
Solution:
(96+1)/8 – ? = (24+1)/8
97/8 – ? = 25/8
? = 97/8 – 25/8
? = 72/8
? = 9
Therefore, the missing number is 9.
Question 5
A box contains 3 blue pencils, 1 green pencil and 6 red pencils. If I pick a pencil from the box at random (with my eye shut). What is the probability that I will pick a pencil that isn’t red?
Solution:
There are 3 + 1 + 6 = 10 pencils in the box.
The probability of picking a pencil that isn’t red is the same as the probability of picking a blue or green pencil.
There are 3 + 1 = 4 pencils that aren’t red.
The probability of picking a pencil that isn’t red is 4/10.
Therefore, the probability of picking a pencil that isn’t red is 4/10.
