Question 1

A bag contains 800 sweets. Sweets are either red, blue or green. There are 8 more red sweets than blue sweets. 30% of the sweets are blue. How many sweets are green?

Solution:

Total number of sweets = 800
Let’s calculate the number of blue sweets first:
Number of blue sweets = 30% of 800
= 0.3 * 800
= 240

Now, let’s calculate the number of red sweets:
Number of red sweets = Number of blue sweets + 8
= 240 + 8
= 248

Finally, let’s calculate the number of green sweets:
Number of green sweets = Total number of sweets – (Number of blue sweets + Number of red sweets)
= 800 – (240 + 248)
= 312

Therefore, there are 312 green sweets.

Solution:

Each tank can hold up to 13 fish.
There are 193 goldfish in the shop.
Therefore, the number of tanks needed = 193 / 13

In a sale, the price of a toy car is reduced by 60%.

Therefore, I pay 40% of the original price.
I buy the toy car for £42.

Therefore, the toy car cost £105 before the sale.

The four numbers 8, 3, 9 and [ ] have an average of 8. What number goes in the box?

= 32
The sum of the four numbers is 8 + 3 + 9 + [ ] = 32
20 + [ ] = 32
[ ] = 32 – 20
[ ] = 12
Therefore, the number that goes in the box is 12.
