Question 1

Mona is making cheese straws for a party.
There will be either six or eight people at the party.
She wants to be able to share the cheese straws
out equally.
How many cheese straws should she make?

Solution:

The number of cheese straws Mona should make must be a multiple of both 6 and 8.
The least common multiple of 6 and 8 is 24.
Therefore, Mona should make 24 cheese straws.
Therefore, Mona should make 24 cheese straws.

Question 2

The function machine below represents the function multiply by 17 then subtract 19.
x -> ×17 -> -19 -> y
Find the value of y when x = 9.

Solution:

Substitute the value of x into the function:
9 -> ×17 -> -19 -> y
= 9 × 17 – 19
= 153 – 19
= 134
Therefore, the value of y when x = 9 is 134.

Question 3

Find the perimeter of the given shape.
figure

Solution:

The perimeter of a shape is the sum of the lengths of all its sides.
Sum = 8cm + 20cm + 8cm + 6cm + 5cm + (20cm – (6cm + 6cm)) + 5cm + 6cm
= 8cm + 20cm + 8cm + 6cm + 5cm + 8cm + 5cm + 6cm
= 66cm
Therefore, the perimeter of the shape is 66cm.

Question 4

A bag contains 16 balls. Five are red, Five are yellow and six are green.
What is the probability of not picking out a red ball?

Solution:

The probability of not picking out a red ball is the same as the probability of picking out a yellow or green ball.
The total number of yellow and green balls is 5 + 6 = 11.
Total outcome = 16

The event of not picking a red ball is our favourable outcome.
Then, The Probability of not picking a red ball = Number of favourable outcome / Number of total outcome = 11/16

Therefore, the probability of not picking out a red ball is 11/16.

Question 5

Which fraction is the odd one out?
1/4, 5/20, 6/24, 7/26, 3/12

Solution:

To find the odd one out, convert all the fractions to their simplest form.
1/4 = 1/4
5/20 = 1/4
6/24 = 1/4
7/26 = 7/26
3/12 = 1/4
Therefore, 7/26 is the odd one out.
