Let the cost of 1 cat bowl be x.
Cost of 3 cat bowls = 3x = £90
x = £90/3 = £30
Cost of 7 cat bowls = 7 × £30 = £210
Cost of 5 dog leads = £210
Cost of 1 dog lead = £210/5 = £42
Therefore, the cost of a dog lead is £42.
Question 3
A rectangle is split into 2 smaller rectangle, labelled X and Y.
Rectangle X is shaded. One sixth of the original rectangle is shaded.
With scissors I cut off and remove a third of Rectangle Y.
What fraction of the remaining shape is now shaded?
Solution:
Let the area of the original rectangle be 6 units.
Area of the shaded part = 1 unit
Area of the unshaded part = 5 units
Area of Rectangle Y = 5 units
1/3 of Rectangle Y = 5/3 units
Area of the remaining shape = 5 – 5/3 = 10/3 units
Area of the shaded part = 1 unit
Fraction of the remaining shape that is shaded = 1 / (10/3) = 3/10
Therefore, 3/10 of the remaining shape is shaded.

Solution:
(a) 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64

Solution:
(a) 1/8 of 512 = 512/8 = 64
(b) 17.5% of 63 = 17.5/100 × 63 = 11.025
